By Zarina Patel

I am sure most of you have heard from your teachers or from your parents that we are living in a “Global Village”. Have you ever thought what it means to be living in a “Global Village”? Living in a global village or becoming a part of global village means that we can communicate and establish correspondence with people on the other side of the world as easily as chatting with our neighbour. All of this is made possible by the “Internet”.

What is Internet?
Internet is a network, which connects computers with one another around the world. It is also referred to as “Computer-based communication”. It is estimated that there are nearly forty million people in the whole world making use of the Internet.

Advantages of Internet
Chatting or sending and receiving emails to friends is not the only function of the Internet. The Internet can prove to be a helpful and supportive tool to make you an exceptional student as well. The Net offers loads of information on different subjects as well as guidelines to improve your study skills. Following are a few guidelines that will help you make the most of this facility.

Study skill and test preparation
There are three key components that are essential for exam preparation — concentration, attention and interest in the subject. But how to build up these study skills in order to obtain high grades in test or exams?

There are several useful sites which are devoted to increase your memory and mind power. These sites offer guidelines, instruction and tips on how to manage or make time for study, develop concentration, improve your study skills and more. If you are not interested in math or chemistry, there are web sites where the web editor provides valuable techniques to motivate you enough to score well in these difficult subjects, too.

They offer newsletters for all those students who require immediate help to solve their study related problems. The procedure is simple. E-mail the web editor and s/he will counsel you or go to the site and search the topics which will be of use to you. You can also subscribe your weekly newsletter. I can give you the address of at least one such site: homeworktips.guide@about.com

E-book facilities
Learning of English and other foreign languages requires that a student must be acquainted with a lot of words and their meanings. For this purpose students can refer to dictionaries. There are many online resources, which offer a good collection of online dictionaries. A few are discussed as under:

www.Dictionary.com  — Just type the word in a search box and you will get the meaning.

www.AllWords.com  — If you don’t know the correct spelling then go to this site and type the first alphabets in the box and all the words that are close to it will appear on your screen with the meanings.

Rahym zones — This is an amazing collection of words with a list of synonyms and definitions.

www.World Central.com  — This site offers meanings with the correct pronunciation.

Encyclopedia
All those interested in acquiring information and knowledge must refer to online encyclopedias. This resource can rightly be called a treasure trove of knowledge. Following is a list of encyclopedias that students can refer to:

Encarta encyclopedia — It’s the world’s most famous information bank, where students can find information and related articles free of charge.

www.Encyclopedia.com  — This site includes 14,000 articles and related topics.

Funk and Wagnulls Multimedia Encyclopedia — As the title reveals this site includes animations and sounds to make learning more fun and pleasurable.

Information Please Encyclopedia — Students can search from over 57,000 articles without any extra charges. Students can find complete list of dictionaries and encyclopedia on http://homeworktips.about.com
