Music: So called chaos

By Nausherwan Saleem

With Alanis Morissette significantly changing from chanting aggressive vocals (manifest in her first two albums) to controlled and relatively measured vocals (evident in “Under Rug Swept” and now “So Called Chaos”), the Canadian songwriter’s music is now within the reach of a wider audience. Alanis maintains her knack for awesomely complicated lyrics in which she pours her romantic heart out. Her creativity is unmatched by any female rock artist, as she fuses eastern elements with her natural western background to produce a winner of an album.

Alanis wastes no time in rocking out loud with the album opener, Eight Easy Steps. The chorus is breathtaking with awe-inspiring music in the background. Alanis surprises with her new eastern-influenced sitars in the rather extravagant ode to her boyfriend Knees of My Bees and again in the title track So Called Chaos with catchy tablas and Alanis in high spirits. Out is Through is crunchy and hopeful. This song shows that Alanis is no longer a screaming banshee talking about feministic issues. In Doth I Protest Too Much, Alanis calmly chants the chorus “I’m not enraged, I’m not afraid as such, not going insane, rational stays in touch, Doth I protest too much?” The title seems to be a reference from some Shakespearean play.

Alanis yet again effectively keeps a balance of harsher tracks with the calmer ones such as the ballad This Grudge. The stand-out track by all means is Everything in which Alanis is at her majestic best. Lyrically meaningful, musically adept and vocally soothing, this song is an indication as to why her new album has become a major chart topper.

Alanis may not come up to the expectations of her fans from the Jagged Little Pill and Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie eras. But all credit goes to her musical genius for redefining her music.
