Shobha and Sahmoo, keepers of the city zoo, have fondly nursed an orphan mouflon lamb, that now considers them her parents. She follows them all day as they move about in the veterinary hospital of the zoo, where they have been posted specially to look after sick animals.
The team consists of Dr Kazim Hussain, Farid Ahmed, Abida Rizvi and the two keepers who play a key role in understanding the mood and demands of the underlings rejected by their parents. Shobha considers the lamb as her baby which she has named Rani.
Farid and Abida arrange for medicines, briefly tranquillizing the nervous animal, as and when necessary, for treatment and to give the sick some rest. Dr Kazim is an experienced vet who keeps a sharp vigil on the sick, healthy and the new arrivals. “The most trying time is the incubation of eggs laid by wild birds in captivity”, the zoo vet admits and “feels happy that due to good management, the large parrots, considered difficult to breed in captivity have also produced young ones”.
“Any one can do it in his or her home by creating right habitat, freedom from fear and right food,” he advises, but “that is difficult and requires professional guidance,” he added.
