Hi kids!

The children were sitting on the floor, their faces gleaming with joy — the joy of getting something that they had only dreamt about but never thought of getting. They were there so that they could be taught how to read and write. They belonged to families with limited means which could barely meet basic needs and which felt unable to invest in their children’s education.

A group of kids who wanted to do something worthwhile in their summer vacation had come up with a plan to educate such children. They had convinced the children’s parents (working mostly as domestic help) to send them over in the afternoon so that they could be taught. They had bought books, copies and pencils from their own pocket money as they knew that their charges could not afford to buy these items.

At the end of the day, both the groups are happy — the ‘teachers’ had the satisfaction of having done something good, of having been able to help others, while the students were happy that they might soon be able to call themselves literate. The children who have organized this programme plan to continue with their venture even after the vacations. With the help of their parents they will make efforts to seek admission at least for the promising ones among their pupils in government schools so that they can get a bit of formal schooling.

Don’t you think that it is a good way to utilize your free time?

Have a happy weekend!

Bye!

Ed
