BOOK: The baby-sitter

By Bushra Ali

R.L. Stine has written nearly 200 books of humour, adventure, horror, and mystery. He is the author of more than two dozen, best selling horror novels for young adults.

How many times have you baby-sat for someone in a creepy house and have had a hunch that someone is going to attack you? Well, in The baby-sitter, the same happens with a teenage baby-sitter, Jenny. She is offered the job to look after the Haven’s son, Donny. The minute she accepts the job, she knows that she has made a deadly mistake.

First of all, the Havens live in a rundown and ramshackled house, which is always creaking and groaning, scaring Jenny out of her wits. The couple, Mr and Mrs Haven are poles apart. Mr Haven is a worrywart, quite fidgety to leave Donny alone with her and keeps instructing Jenny on what to do and what not to. Mrs Haven, on the other hand, is quite laid back and always tries to calm her panicky husband and assures him that Jenny is a responsible person.

Jenny encounters a visitor, Willers, the next-door neighbour, from time to time. In addition, she is receiving threatening calls; almost all of them have the same message: “company’s coming”. Jenny is quite petrified. She suspects Chuck, her school friend.

In addition, Mr Haven’s panicky nature seems to be mounting. Jenny wants to know the reason for his edginess, and discovers something: those days, there were many reports of assaults on baby-sitters. Now Jenny has to find out who the mysterious spook is and so do you. Is it Mr Willers, the dowdy neighbour? Or Chuck, who can be aggressive and dangerous? Or is it someone else?
