BOOK: Books kids will love

By Shah Zaman

Some children’s books are so beautifully designed that even elders love to indulge in fun reading. Although it refreshes their own memories of childhood, yet they feel envious for not having them when they were young and would have made more appropriate readers.

Khattay Meethay Falsay, Abhi Batao Jaldi Batao and Paoon Paoon are the three books published by the Bookgroup that will surely attract kids and elders alike. The enjoyable poems and stories, penned in Urdu, are accompanied by colourful illustrations, which lend an added attraction.

Paoon Paoon, a poem, describes feet in an interesting way and is meant for fun reading. The same style is adopted for Abhi batao jaldi batao. Some might say that the poems sound unintelligent and make little sense and that the writers could have done a better job. However, they do focus on enhancing kids’ Urdu speaking skills by introducing them to many simple words, which would surely help to increase their vocabulary.

Khattay Meethay Falsay is a collection of poems and short stories. It is meant for kids who are a bit older, studying in class four. The publishers have made a good effort to introduce common Urdu idiomatic expressions in this book. Some stories like Baraay Janwar, Hamza Kamal ka Khandan are both informative and interesting. Kuchway ka Khool and Hatto Pahar are some of the worth mentioning stories. One can say that selection of topics has been made keeping in mind the comprehension level of kids.

There is so much in the books that would lure parents to buy them right away for their kids, but at the same time many would find their price a bit high. One hopes, the publishers revise the cost of these books and those to be released in the future, to bring them within the reach of many more.
