AT the beginning of the new academic year there is a great shortage of books. The teachers are demanding newly edited books whereas the shopkeepers at the bookstores say that there is a shortage of these new books. Some even say that they have not been provided any newly edited books at all. The board of education should immediately provide the course books so that the students can begin their studies.

Unfair!
A few days ago, my father, who is in the Merchant Navy was supposed to stop at Karachi port. Since we hadn’t seen him for the past six months we were all very eager to meet him. His ship was to berth at Keamari, so we went there to surprise him.
In order to enter the port we needed a gate pass which we had to make from a little booth beside the gate. But when my mother applied for the pass they told her that women were not allowed to go inside and in order to enter, she needed to get permission from the head office some ten miles away. I don’t understand why women were not allowed to enter, when every other man was?
Whatever happened to the notion of women being equal members of the society? What happened to all the rights Islam gave to women? Why is our government so gender biased? I demand the government to treat men and women equally!

The right to education
I have discussed with my friends, teachers and parents the reasons why so many children in our country never learn to read and write. I believe that the below mentioned measures will help the government to provide every child the right to go to school and get quality education.
* The government should hire and train qualified teachers.
* Existing schools should be renovated in order to provide good atmosphere to students and to encourage children to go to schools.
* Night schools should be introduced for children who cannot attend school in the morning and afternoon due to the fact that they have to work as well.
* “paid to learn” system in schools should be introduced to encourage children to attend schools.
* The government should team up with renowned publishers to produce more informative books of high quality at low prices.
* Students should not be discriminated on the bases of government and private schools and English and Urdu medium schools.
* The facilities should be similar in English and Urdu medium Schools.
I feel that every child can get quality education, if these measures are taken.

Respecting teachers
THESE days the phrase “respect for teachers” has been kicked out of our daily life. Teachers are not respected the same way as they were ten to fifteen years ago. Misbehaving with teachers has become a very common practice these days.
In schools which have big names, some children who think that they are big shots, even physically abuse the teachers. A while ago, there was an incident in which a female teacher was murdered by her student. This is one of the worst act that a student can commit. If a teacher punishes a child, it is for his/her benefit, but instead of appreciating the teacher or saying sorry, the children start arguing with the teacher or make funny faces at the teacher.
If teachers take action or call the parent’s of the child, the parents instead of considering the child’s mistake, start arguing with the teachers. The respect for female teachers has drastically declined, some kids instead of listening what is being taught in class just stare at them. Sometimes the teacher gets so frustrated that she has to remind the students that she is like a mother or sister to all, irrespective of their age.
I think that it is high time now to take action against these students or else the students will take over the schools they study in, and will start teaching the teachers.
