Story Time: WHY DO such things happen?

By Javariah Khan

“Get in line. Stay to your right, girls. Form a line, girls.” Well you people must have recognized that these orders and voices are of none other than the school/college prefects or the volunteers.

“Ah! Grr...grr... I hate these voices. I hate the orders they give to the students. I think these volunteers or the prefects are only left with a single job and that is ordering the poor school or college students.” These are the most common comments that we usually get to hear from the people who are often scolded by the volunteers.

Every moment of our life is unforgettable and whatever has happened with us by now is all history. Some days back an incident took place that has forced me to write. Well... well... well I feel sorry if any of my college volunteer is reading this but I have to write.

The pain is unforgettable and the way I had to suffer because of it in college cannot be forgotten even if I try to do so.

I had hurt myself by hitting my foot against the door. My foot got a bump and Oh... the pain was somewhat like “Ah...Uh...” In fact, I hate ordering and being ordered. I could not walk properly and since I was in pain I was just ordering my brothers and they were working for their poor sister. At that time I realized the importance of ordering.

All night long my mother continued to apply tips and on the very next day when I woke up in the morning there was no swelling but pain. Now here the problem arose. I had a college test and I couldn’t miss the test. So, despite my mum’s repeated advise to stay home I decided to go to college. I wore my casual slippers and headed towards college.

When I entered the college premises I went mad because some 50 girls asked me why was I wearing these slippers? Now you all can imagine if simple girls noticed how could I have hidden this situation from the volunteers!

At 8:30 the bell rang and I gathered my bag and baggage and started climbing the staircase. The classroom was just a foot away when all of a sudden someone patted my shoulder. I turned back and felt like lightening had struck me. I was taken by this severe jolt because that someone was none other than the volunteer.

In an angry voice she said, “Yes, hmm, come down with me.” She took me downstairs and started inspecting my bag like a custom officer. Then she repeated the same old question about the slippers. I explained everything to her and also added that if she has any doubts I could show her the bump.

And as I removed my slippers I failed to prove my statement because there was no swelling. She asked me to pay a fine of Rs100 for not being in proper uniform and for lying.

I tried to defend myself; I requested her but all in vain. I told her several times that the heavy fine imposed on me was unfair but she insisted that it was the right thing to do. Alas I was trapped. My words were somewhat like: “Please don’t be so rude. Aren’t you a human being? Aap kay takleef hoti na tu aap say poochti”. Oh... as I said this she grew wild and took me to the in-charge. The in-charge questioned me and set me free after the next bell rang.

The worst part of the whole event is that though despite the pain I went to college just for the test, spent all my time in solving the dispute, I never got a chance of solving the test paper.
