Book: Mark waugh: the biography

By Omair Alavi

The game of cricket has always brought glory for successful cricketers but only a pair of twins “Steve and Mark Waugh” managed to capture the limelight by playing great cricket for Australia for over a decade. Mark Waugh, the younger of the Waugh twins, who retired after being dropped ahead of the 2003 Ashes series, recently came up with his biography Mark Waugh: The Biography, which tells the readers all they ever wanted to know about him.

With help from James Knight, Mark tells the truth behind the controversies he featured in, the matches he played in and his personal and professional life before and after retirement. In short, he recalls everything that happened to him from his childhood to his retirement from international cricket in 2002. His recall is made more colourful with the help of excellent pictures of both the Waugh twins from their days in the pram to their days of glory. Mark’s pictures after scoring memorable centuries, his post-match moments, his sharing bicycle and picnic outings with twin brother Steve and some family get together images show his personal side that was never seen before.

Mark, who unlike his twin Steve never captained Australia, played from his first Test to his last as a middle order batsman, scoring 8,029 runs in 128 Tests with the help of 20 centuries at an average of 52.27. In One Day Internationals, his record was as impressive as he managed to score 8,500 runs in his 244 matches at an average of 39.35 with the help of 18 centuries which is an Australian record. He also holds the record of most catches (181) in Test cricket, while he took 85 wickets as a part-time bowler and 108 catches as a fielder in the shorter version of the game. More statistics like these can be found in his biography which also features a foreword by Mark Waugh’s first Test captain Allan Border.

So if you were a big fan of Mark Waugh, like me, then you must read this biography as it tells you how long Mark had to wait to make an everlasting impression on and off the cricket field and what made him a separate entity from his equally successful twin brother Steve.
