Inter-school English debate 2003-2004 An Inter-School English Debate was recently hosted by the Beaconhouse School System, Clifton Campus. Speakers representing 15 primary schools of Beaconhouse School System, including teams from as far as Bahawalpur, Sadiqabad, Rahim Yar Khan and Hyderabad as well.
The debate touched a very important aspect of today’s young children’s lives, “Computer games are better than outdoor games”.
Yes, thundered the young debaters who were supporting the motion. They stressed that computer games were more interesting, entertaining and appealing as compared to outdoor games. They offered an unlimited range of games that are very challenging and enhance children’s intelligence. They don’t have limitations of time and space. A speaker mentioned that the games could easily be played by physically handicapped/special children in the safe and secure atmosphere of home.
The speakers against the motion were equally enthusiastic. They presented their point of view forcefully, supported by many quotes and verses from poems. They stressed that outdoor games provided opportunities to maintain physical fitness that leads to good health. They asserted that computer games were confining children indoors. The constant use of computer screens was affecting children’s eyesight. Lack of physical exercise was causing health problems. Another point was that constant breakdown of electricity, hampered and curtailed these activities. Some speakers felt that not many people could afford computer games.
