Get hold of internet

To make web surfing a pleasant experience you must be acquainted with the basic terms of the Internet. Following are the words you come across during Internet navigation.

Terms to get connected
Logon
The meaning of logon is to open. To start the web journey you need to type your password and User ID in a network connection dialogue box. This process of writing your password to access Internet connection is known as “Logon”. (This term also applies when you sign on to computer system).

Online
After verifying your password, the ISP connects your computer to the network and begins to pass signals to the modem of your computer via the phone line. At this stage you are said to be online. As soon as you are online a connection icon showing two computers appears on the task bar.

Protocol
There are some communication rules, which are set to look after sending and receiving messages from a computer network. These rules are known as Protocols.

IP Address
When you get an Internet connection your computer is given an address in the form of numbers. This address is known as Internet protocol address (IP). Other computers send data to your computer by the way of the IP address. To know your IP address click on “the connection icon” and select “Details” tab. “Client IP address” is given in the property column or simply type “ipconfig” in MS DOS (Windows XP).

TCP/IP
It is also known as a Transmission control protocol/ Internet protocol. It is a set of protocols, which allows you to communicate with other computers on the Internet. Computers with different operating systems can talk to each other on the Internet by means of TCP/IP.

Computers with different operating systems interact with each other.

Terms to start surfing

Web browser
After you have completed all the formalities it is time to enjoy surfing the web. To access the web we install a software known as web browser. It is a program used to display web pages on the screen of your computer. There are two popular web browsers — one is Internet explorer and other is Netscape.

URL (Uniform resource locator)
It is the address of the website, which is read by the web browser to display information on your computer screen.

Homepage
It is the first electronic document that is exhibited on your computer screen when you visit a website. It consists of main headings and contents of the web site.

Hyperlink text
Some words on the webpage are underlined or sometimes pop-up, when you click these words it takes you to another page. These wordings are known as hyperlink text.

Hyperlink images
Its function is similar to hyperlink text; the only difference is that hyperlink images have pictures to take you to other pages.

Download
It is entering of a file (email attachments) to your computer via Internet.

Upload
The process of transferring a file from your computer to another computer is called upload. When you attach a file to your emails to send it to your friend it is called uploading of a file from your computer.

Guest Book
Many websites include a web page by the name of guest book, here you can type your likes and dislikes about the web site.

Share ware
The software program that you can download from the Internet, or try before buying is known as shareware. The trial version is saved in your computer for a limited time period.

Freeware
Unlike shareware programs, freeware can be downloaded and saved in your computer free of charge. For example MSN messenger.

Web Space
If you are interested in designing and want to circulate this website on the Internet you need web space. Your ISP provides you this space on his computer to store your web site.

Terms for ending net journey

Log off
When you discontinue the use of Internet this term is used to show that you have closed the Internet connection.

Offline
When you are not connected to the Internet but work on a PC it is said to be working offline.
