Fourteen year old Dave Mitchell’s father is always raving about how a dog can be a great educational experience for a boy his age. Instead, Dave adopts a stray Tom-cat. And discovers that having a Cat, for that’s what he names his cat, as a pet is no less adventurous in the big sprawling city of New York. Often simply looking for the lost Cat, Dave is led into befriending a couple of people that he would have never even spoken to before, including a shy but interesting girl his own age by the name of Mary. Then there is Kate, a much older lady who lives in a home that is literally an orphanage for stray cats.
Observing these new people and their families opens a window into his own family life through which Dave can see his father as more human and someone who is genuinely concerned about his welfare. With the help of his father he even manages to help a talented but jobless young nineteen year old that Cat has taken a liking to. As times move on Dave grows and outgrows his circle of friends learning to find people he truly agrees with. The book deals with issues that any regular teenager would face and through it the reader too will discover that often people are more than what they appear to be on the surface and only time will prove their real sincerity to you.
