Book: Ordinary people

By Ruba Athar

A New York Times Bestseller, the title of the book was enough to attract me. Anything but ordinary, this book is a must-have for all you bookworms out there. The beautifully written book begins on a lazy morning as eighteen-year-old Conrad gets ready for school. The uneventful day carries on and the reader is slowly made aware of the actual subject matter of the story.

A tragedy can at times break a family apart. In this book, we get to read about an ordinary family like yours and mine and their struggle to keep their family together, under all circumstances. Preconceived notions, confused mixed-up feelings and moments of joy and suffering are all experienced by this family on an everyday basis.

An interestingly different book, the only drawback is that it drags a bit in the middle chapters. Fast-paced readers may find it rather dull and would definitely want to skip a few pages. However, the unique ending is bound to leave you awed. The title of the book is catchy enough and so is the overall format. It’s definitely worth your time.

“It is the story of family relationships among a father, mother and troubled son in the wake of a family tragedy. It is simply and cleanly written, perceptive and moving.”– Newsday

“An unpretentious, expert piece of fiction. Guest has the valuable gift of making us like her characters; she has the rather rarer ability to move a toughened reviewer to tears.”– Newsweek
