I am a clone. No, please, don’t ignore me. It’s not my fault that I was born that way. A brutal scientist cloned me on the request of yet another equally brutal commoner, “son-of-a-human”.
I am twenty years old now. My life in the past two decades has been a terrible nightmare. I have no sisters, no brothers, no parents, no neighbours, and almost no friends. I have no home. I was sent to a boarding school when I was two years old. This was because my human counterpart (who financed my existence so that he could see himself growing up) was tired of changing my diapers. I don’t know; this is what people tell me!
I’ve always tried to figure out what a home is like. I do not know what they mean when they talk of “loving parents” and “caring siblings”. I never understood what are grandmothers for, or, exactly what they do. All I know is what my teacher tells me. At the age of five, I knew how I was born. I know all the scientific details that most of you will not understand. Yet, one thing I do not know is my aim in life. I am here, but, what for? Perhaps if I had parents, I’d ask them. I wish I were a normal human being. They’re so lucky.
Please do not fall into the misconception that I am the only clone on Earth. There are hundreds of thousands of us. Any human (“Norm-man” is what he’s now called) can have himself cloned. All he has to do is to hire a scientist, donate some cells from his body and wait. Unfortunately, we clones aren’t allowed to have ourselves cloned. They say, they don’t have such a technology, but I know they lie to us. We are no different from “Norm-men”. But you see we’re treated as guinea pigs and underdogs.
Some evil minds create us only to butcher us whenever they need a lung, liver, kidney, heart or brain. It is so heart- rending to know that we are helpless in this regard presently. Every year many of us become victims of the medical-men, who take our organs and transplant them in our human counterparts. Whoever amongst us refuses to donate the organ is butchered.
Apart from this, we are being employed in the army, navy, air force, etc. We are trained to do our jobs and are told that we are the guards of the country! We are given special treatment in the forces. Anyone can understand this — we are to replace the norm-men there. Governments encourage people to have their clones made at a reasonable price only to have a good number of us in the forces. This method is being adopted by almost every country, and most countries now have all-clone armies.
Our increasing population has created quite a few problems. The “Norm-men” have become hostile towards us since we are to share the meagre resources on Earth with them. Human nature is weird; man does something, dislikes it, and then strives to get rid of it. Only yesterday I saw some environmentalists putting on bumper stickers saying kill. Of course that’d hurt! Why did they create us in the first place if they wanted to kill us later? I hope they don’t attribute killing as “normal human behaviour”.
To safeguard clone rights, we clones have decided to set up a Clone Committee. We will discuss and solve each other’s problems there and decide our mode of action in response to the hostilities of the “Norm-man”. The first meeting of the Clone Committee is tomorrow, and I am planning to put forward the suggestion of printing stickers saying “Kill the Humans”. Killing them would be easy since most of us are now trained to kill the enemy. Yet, I feel ashamed of myself to even think of that. This will cause so much tumult and will, of course, cause so much of bloodshed and loss of lives.
I am educated, hence I think. It is no good to shed blood. If you kill someone today, tomorrow may well be your turn! I hope humans read this and try not to let things get out of hand. Please, humans, do the needful. If you don’t need the clones, don’t make them!
