Story Time: Beware of Internet chatting

By Madiha Shaukat

Sarah was still sitting in front of the computer table and chatting with unknown people on MIRC. At once her mother entered the room and Sarah hurriedly turned off the computer. When her mother asked her what she was doing. She answered just playing a game. So her mother again gave her a long lecture to stop playing games for hours and hours on the Net and instead give more attention to her studies.

But Sarah paid no heed to these lectures because she felt that this was an everyday affair. Her friends had told her about Internet chatting and how exciting the whole phenomenon was. So Sarah convinced her father to bring her a computer and then get her an Internet connection too. Now she was totally addicted to random chatting. Every day she added a new email address to her contact list. In fact, she was not aware of the dangers of random chatting. Though she used a fake name but she could still be traced. Sarah’s friends also tried to stop her and tried to tell her of the dangers, but all in vain.

Nothing had happened yet but this time she was introduced to the wrong kind of person. She became his friend and days went by.

Gradually she started to like him. She started believing in him. But this time she was wrong and was putting her trust in someone who was not worthy of it at all. He saved all her mails and chat files and told Sarah that he did so because he loved her and wants to remember all their conversations. He also traced her telephone number by a tracing software. But little did she know about it. At last the time came when he started to blackmail her. He knew all about her college, her phone number and her address. Her files were in his possession. Sara had no way out. At last he insisted to meet her. Sarah couldn’t say no so she agreed unwillingly. She was afraid but she had no choice. She had taken another wrong step. Now, he had also seen Sarah she did this because she didn’t want her family to know about this matter. But she didn’t know that she would do the right thing by confiding in her family. Little did she know that she was being trapped due to her own stupidity. But how could she hide her worries from her family. Her little sister overheard one of the threatening calls in which he was demanding money from Sarah.

Now Sarah had to tell her family. All of this got her family extremely worried. Their trust was shaken. Her family informed the police and then the person blackmailing Sarah was investigated and arrested. Sarah now lives a lonely life with her room always locked. She doesn’t meet her friends and relatives due to embarrassment. She left college. All because she never paid any heed to her family and friends. Sarah is not the only person whose life was destroyed by the Internet, there are a number of other people who like her have lost all that they cherished at the hands of this technology.

If you also are a random chatting addict then please stop at once. Don’t forget that you can be traced easily. It’s not entertainment it’s the question of your life and I am sure you would never want to destroy your life with your own hands just for the sake of a measly Internet chat.
