I went to see off a friend who was going abroad in search of a better career and a bright future. Later that night when I was alone, I kept pondering over these three words “a better future”.
A lot of questions came to my mind, I asked myself, “what is a better future?” “What can we do to make our future better?” “Have we done what we should have done for a better future?” “Have we performed the duties that have been laid upon us?”
I realized to make our future and our country’s future bright, we all need to do our share of work and fulfil our responsibilities, as a drop is important to make an ocean. Someone once very correctly quoted:
“You are never too young, and you don’t need much to make a difference.”
Now, acting upon this quote, I won’t make bright, glorious, dreamy promises, which I won’t be able to keep. But rather it will be something that will satisfy me for doing a little something for a better future.
To have a better future, firstly I will try my best to study hard and strive for knowledge so that I can serve my country in whatever way I can, specially by achieving my aim in life i.e. by trying to become a doctor. In this way I will not only serve my country but I will serve humanity as well. When I decided to become a doctor, I was inspired a great deal by this beautiful quotation by Annie Dillard as it taught me to make sacrifices for the sake of others:
“The dedicated life is the life worth living.”
A better environment is the second best thing needed for a better future, so I will stop polluting the environment by not littering the streets and I will also encourage others to do so. In this way our country would be a better place to live in and so would the world. Planting more trees will not only give us fresh air to breathe but will also give our localities a cleaner and a greener appearance.
Encouraging education and donations for better schooling or educational institutions will not only stop bright, intelligent young people from going abroad for better education and then, later for employment but will also give other people a chance to satisfy their thirst for knowledge.
Not being selfish and helping as many people as you can, as you go on your way can also prove to be a good and worthy cause for a bright future that shines and twinkles like a star. We can help anyone, anywhere, in any way that we like. As George Elliot puts it:
“What do we live for if not to make life less difficult for each other”
Obeying rules, no matter how small they are, is a step towards a better living as this attitude helps us understand our responsibilities.
Curbing corruption, like not offering and accepting bribes first ourselves and then telling other to do the same is also one of the many ways in which in which we can brighten our future.
I also came to realize, that our attitudes matter a lot and that people can change their lives just by changing their attitudes. As William James said:
“Men can alter their lives by altering their attitudes.”
Accepting our responsibilities, and recognizing and respecting the rights of others will not only stop us from committing crimes but will also build our self-esteem. Keeping out of small fights, quarrels and arguments helps build respect in the other person’s eyes. Though, I know that these little acts don’t seem much, they are the drops, forming the vast, bright ocean of a modern, literate, civilized and a friendly society. So I, in my own capacity will try my level best to make this world a better place to live in for the entire human race. I also want people to think of me fondly when I pass away as it is said:
“Be a leader and not a follower since people already have to look up to you, give them a good reason to do so.”
It feels great to write about all these things, which though seem small can prove to be very important for a bright future. And I guess that more pleasure will be attained in making these words come true and acting upon these statements. As tomorrow never comes, I will try my best to work on these resolutions starting today, starting right now for as John Baez said:
“You don’t get to choose how you’re going to die or when. You can, however, decide how you’re going to live now.”
I think that I’ve made my point, which is, that if we all perform our duties honestly and perform our share of actions, our country will not be less than any other in the world and instead of going abroad, people from foreign countries will come to study here. The future will then be ours.
I pray to Allah to give us all strength to fulfil our responsibilities with skill and honesty.
