DO you know that the setting of your computer screen reflects your personality? This comprises of the display of desktop, background colours, font sizes, and screen resolutions. The options you select for each reflect your thinking.
The “Display” option of CONTROL PANEL is reserved to bring changes in the appearance of your computer screen. You can also rearrange the appearance of your window environment by means of the “Customize” option. You can customize your window environment, through different ways. Some are as follows:
Make your work handy
If you wish to set up your files and programs in such a way that they appear on the start menu, just by clicking the start button, do as follows:
For Windows XP environment:
* Right click the START button on the task bar.
* Select properties from the short cut menu.
* At the Start button tab click CUSTOMIZE.
* Now click the ADVANCE tab.
* Check the item from the “Select menu item”. Suppose you have checked the “Favorites menu”
* Click “OK”. Do you notice that the program “Favorites menu” now appears on the start menu? For windows 98 environment:
* Open windows explorer and select the program item.
* Click the “Create short cut” icon.
* Click the plus sign of windows folder then the “Start” menu and then the “Programs” folder.
* Drag and drop the selected shortcut items into the programs folder.
* Click the program folder to view the short cut file.
Change the appearance of mouse pointer
We use Mouse pointer to navigate the document.
If you don’t like the default appearance then you may select the pointer of your choice from the given range.
* From “Start” menu select “Control panel” and double click the mouse.
* Select the “Pointers” tab from the mouse properties dialog box.
* Open “scheme” list box. There are at least 25 pointer schemes listed here.
* You can select any scheme such as “3D pointer”, “Dinosaurs”, “Old fashioned”, and “Windows Black”, etc.
* Notice when you select any scheme, the “Customize” box just below the scheme list box will show all the new icons of this scheme.
* Suppose you select “Old-fashioned scheme”. The customize box will show the following icons for “normal”, “help select” and “busy”, etc. activities.

You can customize the mouse motion speed, mouse visibility and other mouse settings with the help of the “mouse properties” option.
Customize workspace
To compose a document easily, adjust the workspace of the screen. Hide tool bars to enlarge the workspace in the following way:
* Tools——— Customize——— Toolbar tab———-unchecked unwanted tool bar.
* View———-Zoom————Select percentage of your choice.
Make new tool bar
As you know “default windows” has both horizontal and vertical tool bars. If these tool bars are bothering you then create a new tool bar with your favorite options such as new, copy, cut, paste, auto shapes and more. To create a customized tool bar do as follows.
* Click the “Tools” option and select the “Customize” option.
* Click the “New” option.
* Add name of the tool bar “My tool bar”.
* Notice that a new tool bar appears on the document; adjust its position on the screen.
* Click the “Commands” tab and drag the different buttons to add to “My Tool Bar”
* Now drop all the buttons (e.g. “New”, “Copy” and “Paste” buttons) one by one on the newly formed tool bar.
These are just few ways to customize windows environment. You can make many changes to windows environment to make your computer screen gorgeous.
