Story Time: Computer — a way of life?

By Maria Masood

“And your web page address?” Said the lad who was wearing a trendy designer’s outfit.

“I haven’t got any,” pat came the reply.

That left him staring at me with eyes wide open, as if I’m an alien. “Are you sure,” he said in quite an astonished tone. Hmmm! Why is that lad so concerned about my web page address and why on earth is he giving me such stupid stares? Is there something wrong with my dressing? After reassuring myself that I was dressed well, I said, “Yeah! I haven’t made any.”

“But why? I guess you don’t wanna be cool,” he said amused. But what the hell has a web page got to do with being cool Oh! Now I get it, I have landed myself into a group of computer freaks whose world revolves around that machine which sometimes I find difficult to operate.

So now my ‘Compu-smart’ friends are trying their utmost to make me fit in their cool pack. Offering free counselling on various ‘hard to learn’ (only in my case) computer languages. My poor brain gets stuffed up with these ‘WEIRD’ languages, for a dumbo (that’s what my friends call me) like me ,who doesn’t even know the capacity of her computer’s hard drive, it’s like starting from zero. My smart friends firmly believe that one-day they’ll make me a computer freak (Ah! I know they won’t).

Sometimes they act quite strange. Like some days ago, a friend of mine looked a bit upset. I walked up to him and asked in a sympathetic tone, if everything was OK. With grief-stricken eyes he looked at me and then lowered his head. Now I was sure that something miserable had happened to him.

“Last night my PC crashed,” he said dejectedly. “Ha! Ha! He...” I burst out. “You are simply mad,” with this remark I left him. I simply don’t have any idea how to console people whose PCs crash. The whole day my friend talked about his PC. The next two days he rested, trying to shrug off that PC (RIP) thoughts.

Once I was coming back home on my bicycle. When while making a turn I fell down, as I was driving it with one hand because in the other I carried a laptop. Thank God that nothing serious happened and I reached home safely with only my knees scarred. The next day I was telling my smart friends about this smart incident. “And what happened to the laptop, is it safe?” They asked nervously after listening to the whole story.

“What?” I asked furiously, they were obviously more concerned about the computer than me..

I don’t want to say that my smart friends are idiots; in fact they all are geniuses, but sitting in front of computer makes them quite lethargic. They spend their days and nights in front of it and even at parties their conversations revolve around this machine...ah! Poor me. I feel that they are simply wasting their carefree years because of this.

I wish to tell all my friends that all work and no play makes Jack an unhappy dull lad! I want to see all my friends happy and brimming with life, full of joy and zest.

I hope someday they realize that life is much more than just sitting in front of the computer.
