“Sorry Mrs Khalid, but truly I couldn’t find my glasses,” uttered Maria Javed, gasping for breath, as she rushed into the classroom late as usual. Mrs Khalid, her exasperated teacher, glared at her, as she sat down. The whole class was in a fit of giggles, and tried not to laugh by thrusting their fists into their mouths. Everyone knew Maria was a tell tale and had excuses for everything.
“Please hand out your math homework,” Mrs Zubair’s squeaky voice broke the silence of the class, an hour later, in the math period. “Er.... Miss, my dog spilled water over my homework and as it was late, I could not do my homework again.”
“I didn’t know you had a dog Maria, I thought you were afraid of dogs,” cried Sara from her desk. Maria glared at Sara, as the rest of the class sneered.
Mrs Zubair looked at Maria and thought of speaking about Maria with the rest of the teachers. Half an hour later in the gym, the Physical fitness teacher told her class to begin with their exercises. The whole class looked at Maria from the corner of their eyes. Everyone knew that Maria hated exercising. Sure enough Maria’s loud booming voice filled the room. “Excuse me miss, I have got a cramp in my foot, it really hurts when I walk, so can I just sit down?” The teacher merely nodded and left the room. She was getting sick and tired of Maria’s usual excuses and felt that something ought to be done.
In the staff room all the teachers gathered and discussed Maria’s predicament. At last Mrs Hameed, the history teacher had an idea. She told the other teachers to wait till the school ended. As the bell rang Maria rushed off to the history class, her favourite subject, looking forward to getting back her history test papers. She was sure that she would get full marks in it as she had worked so hard for the test.
“I am so glad that you can run again after that foot cramp, Maria,” Madiha shouted, her voice full of sarcasm. She laughed as Maria scowled at her. They entered the classroom and seated themselves waiting to get their history papers. Mrs Hameed came and distributed the papers.
Maria waited patiently for her paper, but she did not get it. “Er... Mrs Hameed, you have forgotten to give my history paper,” said Maria.
“I am sorry, Maria,” replied Mrs Hameed. “My dog spilled water on your paper and therefore I couldn’t check it.”
