BOOK: The seven dials mystery

By Behjat Sahar

The Seven Dials Mystery is one of Agatha Christie’s most thrilling detective stories. The story starts when some people living at a mansion known as Chimneys decide to play a joke on Gerald Wade. Gerald, or Gerry, is a lad who always overslept in the morning. So these people buy eight alarm clocks to hide in Gerry’s room at night; all were to ring at a proper time in the morning makin Gerry wake up early.

But the joke was not as successful. They had expected the clocks to ring and wake up Gerry at 6:30am. But when Gerry did not wake up till 12:00 they go to investigate and find Gerry dead on his bed, with seven clocks arranged neatly in a row; the eighth one was found thrown in the garden!

Lady Brent, known as Bundle, who also lived at the Chimneys, stepped forward to look into the matter. She found an incomplete letter which Gerry was writing to his sister. In that letter he mentioned something about the seven dials. Later when Bundle was driving to London, a man suddenly came in front of her car and died on the spot. Bundle thought she hit him. In fact, he was shot at. The last words he spoke to Bundle were “Seven Dials...tell...Jimmy Thesiger...”

Bundle goes out to find Jimmy Thesiger. Evidence lead dapper Jimmy Thesiger and Bundle to a Soho club where they learn about the Seven Dials Society. Bundle finds the Society’s meeting place and manages to overhear their conversation. They were discussing the happenings and murder of Gerry at the Chimneys, silencing people by murder and stealing scientific inventions!

What is the Seven Dials Society up to? Do they have their spies at the Chimneys which could notice Bundle’s actions? Did they murder Gerry and put up the seven clocks as a mark of their society? Will they murder someone else too to silence and steal scientific inventions? Bundle and Jimmy should act fast before the Society inflicts any more harm.
