Physics quiz This is with reference to the physics quiz by Ambreen Arshad (YW October 4). Question number 6 asked, “As the velocity of a particle increases, what happens to its mass?” The answer given was that the mass decreases. This is not right, as the mass of a particle/body is always constant, irrespective of its velocity. SYED ADIL AHMAD, Karachi
Dear Adil, You are right, it was a mistake on Ambreen’s part which is deeply regretted. Ed
Quality or quantity? A number of institutes were established during last three or four years. This is good but I feel that due to the cropping up of many institutes there has been a major decline in the educational standard. Most of these institutes and universities are not licensed and offer the students hardly any good opportunities for employment after they finish their studies.
I really wish that the government would look into this matter and take some very serious measures to stop these universities from mushrooming. JUNAID IQBAL, Malakand
A better world Pollution is the most serious problem in the world these days. There are many factors, which causes pollution.
Air pollution is caused by smoke extracted by the factories and vehicles. The garbage which is burnt, also produces many harmful gases. In Pakistan, traffic pollution is common.
Water pollution takes place due to oil spills or factory waste or throwing of litter in the seas and rivers. On one hand, it spoils marine life and on the other, they cause many problems for the people too. In fact, pollution is harmful for us in many ways. I feel that we can help prevent our environment from being polluted. The government should also take measures to stop this menace. GHAZAL ARIF, Karachi
Reckless driving Reckless driving and accidents are quite common in Karachi. Every day we read in the newspaper that so many people have been killed as a result of an accident. The main cause for these causalities is usually the reckless driving of local busses.
I am a college student and go to college by bus. Everyday I see that even though the bus is full the driver waits for more passengers, as a result most of the people are usually left hanging at the bus entrance. This is extremely dangerous as busses are know for speeding. They don’t usually stop at the assigned stops. People, in an attempt to get off at stops, have to usually jump off these busses and fall pray to accidents. I request the government to take appropriate measures to curb this problem. Our pride — Karachi University I feel proud being a student of Karachi University. The varsity is spread on a large area which comprises the IBA Department, Faculties of Arts and Science, Pharmacy, Computer Science and hostels for boys and girls. But due to lack of attention by the university authorities and the City Government, a large area is deserted and is totally void of any plantation or vegetation.
These are only few trees planted and lush green grass is only seen in some specific areas. Through the columns of your newspaper, I would like to ask the concerned authorities to start thinking about it seriously as Karachi University is a symbol of pride for the Karachiites. More space please! I am a citizen of Karachi living in Buffer Zone. I want to bring to your notice that there is a great shortage of parking areas in the city due to which people have to face a lot of problems. Parking areas are not well maintained. Some people park their vehicles so badly that it is difficult for other cars to pass. There are also no rules and regulations and if there are then nobody obeys them.
I request the KMC to take notice of the situation. SYEDA FATIMA ZAINAB, Karachi
