Hi Kids!

There is no need for me to remind you that the holy month of Ramazan is just round the corner. You all know that and have been waiting anxiously for it. But, do let me know honestly — do you really wait for Ramazan so that you could fast according to the will of God, or your wait is for the yummy Iftari that mom makes, the Eid shopping and finally the Eidi you would receive on Eid day.

Ramazan should be awaited and welcomed for the blessings and holiness that it brings with it. The fast should be observed in its true spirit as God has commanded. It is meant to enable you to learn to control your ‘self’, and not just your hunger and thirst, as God, the Most Merciful, has no wish to keep you hungry, He wants you to learn how it feels to be hungry so that you can understand how those who can’t afford two square meals a day feel. You observe a fast during the day but know that you’ll get delicious Iftari at the end of it, but don’t forget that there are people, even kids, out there who toil all day long and yet have to break their fast with a glass of water and a plain meal.

And hunger and thirst are just one factor. Controlling your temper, giving charity and living according to the rules set by Allah are some of the important prerequisites of fasting.

Some kids don’t fast on the pretext that they have to go to school and study, and some spend most of their time in air-conditioned rooms so that they do not feel the heat. I remember, when I was young the month of Ramazan fell in June and July when the day is longer and the weather much warm. Yet no excuse was accepted and we all had to fast. Now, the days are shorter and the weather is expected to remain cool as November starts.

Don’t you think Ramazan makes your life a bit disciplined? How about maintaining this discipline and retaining the good habits you acquired during Ramazan.

Have a nice time!

Bye!

Ed
