Things To Do: Crayon work

By Ghanim Akhter

This is a technique of filling still life with colours. In this technique you draw a still life painting. To give it a unique and eye catching effect, you can colour it with crayon and put cuts on it with a paper cutter. It’s really a very interesting and creative chore so let’s see how it is done.

Things You Need:

* Oil pastel crayons
* Paper cutter
* A paper sheet

Getting started

On a sheet draw a pot, a glass, a fruit or any other simple object. With a light pencil, divide it vertically into three equal sections; take three shades of crayons of the same colour scheme. Like if you want to get the pink shade, take pale, light pink and purple. Start colouring with the darkest shade in the left most section of the drawing, which is purple here. Then in the middle portion the medium shade, which is the light pink colour and then colour the right section with the lightest shade that is the pale pink.

Remember no matter what colour scheme you make use of, the brown shade has to be used in all the drawings.

In the beginning it will surely look bad as it spoils all your shades but you will be amazed to see how well it blends with the rest of the shades later.

Making cuts

Open your paper cutter and start making crooked cuts on all the drawings. As soon as you do this you will see that the shades you applied first will become visible.

Finishing

Take a black oil pastel crayon and make an outline of the drawing. Make sure that your crayon is pointed. In the end give it a baseline and shade it with black and brown.

At first go for simple objects. After making a few of these, go on to make complex drawings with more than one object. In dealing with more than one object it is important to arrange them when you draw. You must decide which pot should be visible at a distance and which one should seem nearer.

It’s a good way to spend your time and is interesting too. I hope you will enjoy doing it so go ahead!
