It goes without saying that an update of an old Disney classic should be fun. With a film like Freaky Friday, in particular, there are so many ways to modernize the classic script. The premise is nice and simple: Mother and daughter have their bodies and lives switched after a little magical chicken chow mein one night at a Chinese restaurant. Soon, the mother is dressing younger and having her ears pierced, while the daughter begins to understand her mother better.
Jamie Lee Curtis plays Tess Coleman, a widowed psychologist about to wed Mark Harmon, while Lindsay Lohan (The Parent Trap) is her fifteen-year-old, guitar-playing daughter Anna. There is much to laugh out loud about in this film, with cute generation gap jokes and a fun script. In particular, there are some great, unexpected moments in the movie, like when Curtis flirts with her daughter’s boyfriend Jake (Chad Murray) or when — with her knees crossed on the chair — she leads a talk show discussion like a campfire scene from camp.
The new Freaky Friday may not compare to the original, which starred Barbara Harris and Jodie Foster, but is worth watching any day of the week.
