Given that Hollywood finds the idea of stay-home dads very funny, it’s a wonder that this idea has not been worked on a great deal. However, this summer Steve Carr directs the mildly amusing family comedy Daddy Day Care starring comic-genius Eddie Murphy and Jeff Garlin.
Eddie Murphy stars as Charlie Hinton, an L.A. suburban dad who has recently been fired from his marketing executive post. So when his pretty wife Kim (Regina King) lands a job as attorney, Charlie finds himself acting Mr. Mom to his 3-year-old son, Ben (Khamani Griffin). He and his pal, Phil (Jeff Garlin), who has also been fired have to go through the agony of looking after their kids while mum plays the role of the bread-earner. It is here that Charlie hits upon the idea of opening a day care centre called ‘Daddy Day Care’ to prove domesticated men’s bent and make up for his lost job. The show starts as the two men join in with a former co-worker Marvin (Steve Zahn) who quickly becomes popular with the kids mainly because he is not a grown-up himself. Soon this happy-go-lucky day care centre becomes the favourite place of the suburban kids.
The movie is mildly entertaining and will not upset you unless you are highly allergic to kids. The jokes are pretty much cliched: toilet accidents, dirty diapers and impossible kids.
Eddie Murphy and Jeff Garlin steal the show with their comical appearance and alarmed looks while Steve Zahn shows a flair for amusing characters as never before. All in all, the family flick’s sure to give the kids a good laugh and adults a slight headache.
