Opinion Corner: E-books vs regular books

AS e-mail will never make the real world postal service obsolete, e-books will not render real books obsolete (not in the foreseeable future at least). Even though the concept of a paperless environment is gaining momentum, still one would find many people at bookshops who love to browse, flip through and explore real books.

I would prefer regular paper books to e-books, as they are very easy to carry along, anytime anywhere. One can also carry e-books by saving them on CDs but it is not that comfortable unless you have a laptop, with the required software installed, to read it.

Another reason why I don’t prefer e-books is that you can only read it while sitting in front of the monitor and the screen resolution is still much lower than that of print on paper.

Even though the environmental as well as monetary advantages of e-books outweigh those of paper books and until this e-book phenomenon really takes over all forms of mediums such as the television, paper books will be preferred.

THOUGH printed books have their own charm, I would certainly go for e-books. E-books as compared to regular books are easier to access. Also they can be updated regularly, unlike the printed books. A wide and unlimited range of information can be given about a certain subject as compared to regular books where the information is limited to the number of pages. It is also easier to find a certain topic in e-books. Information keeps on changing and there is no better way of keeping up-to-date than the net and that’s why I would prefer e-books over printed books, which I think is a waste of time and money.

BEING a bookworm, I can’t imagine my life without books! I think books make you feel very relaxed and a good book can help you escape into a new world. The best thing about books is that you can take a book anywhere, from your bedroom to a hill in Murree or anywhere at all. A book is supposed to be a bounded and printed sort of a copy.

E-books on the other hand are not that enjoyable. For one, your eyes get strained after some time and they start hurting. Secondly, reading e-books wastes a lot of electricity. While normal books can be taken anywhere e-books can only be read on the computer and cannot be taken anywhere else expect the computer table. Imagine someone taking the whole computer on his bed to read e-books! Also you can’t enjoy an e-book on a nice, cool, breezy day under a tree and relax. That you can only do with the usual books! So for my part I will always choose to read the good old regular books!

I WOULD surely say e-books. Not because I want to spend more time on the computer or it would be something new. I would prefer e-books because it would be easier to browse through and find answers. It has many advantages like it saves time and learning becomes fun for every one. As these days youngsters love to spend time on the computer, it would be fun reading their syllabus on the computer. If kids study the same book in regular form they call it boring. This is why I prefer e-books rather than the regular ones.

FIRST of all everything is catalogued and it’s easy to search in e-books, instead of going through pages and pages. In printed book everything cannot be catalogued in the order like e-books. So I would prefer e-books to regular books as it will be difficult for the people to print so many copies of a single book if they wanted to print. Similarly it would be time consuming and also a lot of space would be required for the books to be stored before selling them out in the market .The best way is to read e-books as it is easier compared to regular books.

THE way I see it, the comparison between printed books and e-books is like an Australia-Bangladesh match. Obviously books represent the Australian team and e-books, the amateur Bangladeshis. Although time is the main factor and the balance can turn in e-books’ favour, for the time being this is not the case. I mean hundreds of quality writers all over the world are accustomed to writing and publishing their books by the best of publishers in business and they are rated according to the number of books sold. That’s why books are the best source of knowledge at your finger tips. Secondly, books, for the time being, have the upper hand economically as well. You can get them from libraries or local bazaars on economical rates. And for me, printed books are more reliable than the so-called e-books.
