A view from the top feels like a typical romantic comedy where the filmmakers thought that 40 minutes of comedy followed by 40 to 50 minutes of romance would be a perfect sequence. But unfortunately the idea does not appeal as movies of such a genre can only be appreciated when romance and comedy goes hand in hand. To add to the mess, the comedy can’t be exactly categorized as funny and the romance appears to be half-baked and predictable with some cliche’-laden dialogues.
The plot revolves around Donna Benson, played by Gwyenth Paltrow, who is a simple girl from a small town and is going through a very low phase of her life and considers herself a plain loser. One day she decides to get out of her dull existence and apply for a job as flight attendant. Her first ever experience in the plane was a nightmare for her as she messed up completely during the flight. After receiving the initial professional jolts she realizes that reaching the top is not as easy as she had thought. She joins a training programme and aims to get her dream job as a stewardess in New York. There is also a side plot with her boyfriend (Mark Ruffalo).
Now does Donna get a chance to have a view from the top or does she fail to keep a balance between her love and professional life?
The plot is pretty much straight forward with no novelty. Also the movie has so many insignificant characters which hardly offer anything in terms of comedy. The only good thing about the picture is Gwyenth Paltrow who does complete justice to her work and portrays the lead character convincingly.
