The beauty and joy of rain

By Behjat Sahar

Let the rain come down and wash away my tears;
Let it fill my soul and drown my fears;
Let it shatter the walls for a new sun;
A new day has come.

(From ‘A New Day Has Come’, a song by Celine Dion)

For the past few weeks it’s been raining in Karachi. And when it rains in Karachi there is water everywhere. Pools of water form over the roads. The children come outside, playing in the water. People were also out on their roofs and lawn, enjoying the rain. It is also good for the crops and soil. All the greenery and plants seem refreshed. But I think the best part of the rain is that it touches everyone. No matter what age a person is or if he has gone outside to enjoy it or not, it touches everyone. And it not only refreshes the plants and crops, but refreshes the people too.

Rain never comes alone. Cold winds, rainbows, clouds and pleasant weather all accompany the rain and add to its beauty. Each scene is wonderful. It mesmerizes the viewer as it pours down from the sky, making ripples on the ground, refreshing the greenery. The rainbow is another piece of art that the rain creates. Pleasant weather is another boon that people benefit from during the rain.

When it is about to rain, the weather becomes pleasant and the clouds begin to form. Soon it starts to drizzle. Then there comes a heavy downpour. We enjoy all these scenes. Even when the rain ceases, it leaves water all over, and the golden rays of the sun start to spread on the earth. Apart from leaving the earth cool and fresh, it also leaves its refreshment and joy in our hearts.

At whatever time it occurs, be it early in the morning, afternoon, evening or night, it brings beauty. If it occurs in the afternoon, it is pleasant as it cools the hot, tiring afternoon. If it occurs at nighttime, then it beautifies the dark night sky. Whether it occurs on hills, houses, lawns, roads, or even a desert, it looks very pleasant. In fact, many a times the place where rain falls also adds to its beauty.

Because rains bring beauty, that beauty is captured and expressed in many different ways. An artist captures its beauty in the form of a painting; a photographer in the form of a picture; and a writer in the form of a written piece. All these people express its beauty to us in their own exceptional way. Although all these artists, photographers and writers have always been intrigued by this awesome phenomenon, they frequently portray their feelings through their work. The reason why artists and writers usually seem obsessed by the rains is the fact that this thing of beauty remains to be a joy forever and never ceases to mesmerize the artistic mind.

So, the place and time where rain occurs, and any scene it creates, all express beauty and joy. As said before, rain is enjoyed by everyone. No one can say that they do not like the rain. Apart from being mother nature’s greatest gift, rain also remains to be mother nature’s greatest beauty.
