Story Time: An encounter with a witch

By Rehab Naved

During the last summer holidays I joined a computer training institute to get a hang of this technology. The institute was at a walking distance from my house. I usually came home early but one evening I got really late so I decided to take the shortcut to my house. I was glad that it was a moonlit night because I later realized that I would have to encounter a spooky graveyard on the way.

I courageously entered the graveyard, as it was pretty eerie. While walking, I felt as if someone was following me but when I turned around I saw nothing but graves. I continued walking, but the feeling of someone following me grew stronger. I was petrified and stood near a lamp-post. Suddenly, I saw a shadow near me, growing bigger and bigger by the second. I could hear the sound of breathing as well and started getting goose bumps and began to tremble. I wanted to run away but it felt as if my legs had turned into jellybeans and were not attached to my body. Then suddenly an idea struck me and I started reciting all the prayers I could remember. Then I remembered all the horror movies that I had watched with my cousins and friends — The Headless Man, The Plump Witch and lots more.

Suddenly a face came in front of my eyes and, as the moonlight fell on it, I saw the ugliest face I’ve ever seen. To my utter surprise a witch with red eyes; jet black, curly, long hair; dark skin and a black coat, stood in front of me. I then heard a shaky voice ask: “Are you afraid of me? Why are you running away? I won’t harm you”.

I was terrified and closed my eyes, trying to remember my prayers. Then suddenly, I heard my brother, Zaid’s voice, calling my name. I was surprised to see him but more astonished when I didn’t see the witch. Zaid asked me why I was standing there but I could not reply. Zaid told me that mom had sent him to pick me up. When I asked him, Zaid was sure he hadn’t seen a single thing.

At home when I told my mom about the incident, she just laughed, but I’m sure it was not my imagination. Something mysterious is going on out there and I’m going to find out what.
