Miscellanea: Environmental education material launched


Environmental education material developed by IUCN- the World Conservation Union was recently launched at a ceremony held at Hyderabad.

Speaking on the occasion, Chairman Senate Mr Mohammedmian Soomro emphasized the need of community participation in creating awareness about environmental degradation. He appreciated the efforts of IUCN and the British Council for raising environmental awareness. He said that material produced by IUCN would inculcate positive attitudes amongst school children, who are the future of this country.

The material covers a wide range of subjects, and is extremely informative. This material is available in Sindhi and Urdu as well. The Director British Council, Charlie Walker said that teachers can play a vital role in creating awareness about environmental issues among the students. Earlier the Country Representative of IUCN Pakistan Mr Abdul Latif Rao in his welcome remarks said, “education forms the foundation of any society. It is through education that we can hope to change approaches and attitudes. Environmental education aims to achieve this in terms of using the bounties of this planet”.

The environmental educational material is an endeavour to introduce school children to the environment of Sindh, its value and our interdependence on it and also to highlight the multifarious issues threatening its integrity. It includes a website, www.sindh.iucnp.org and a number of books. A documentary called The Land of the Indus is also included in the package.

All-Sindh Secondary Level English Debate


The All-Sindh Secondary level English debate was held recently at Hyderabad. The Happy Home School Karachi emerged as the winners with their thought provoking arguments. All the credit for this achievement went to Faraz Parvez and Ghufran Rehmani who were greatly appreciated by the audience. Mr Irfanullah Khan Marwat, the education minister of Sindh was the guest of honour.
