I am a student of class XI and one thing really bothers me a lot. I feel that I am not confident of my English language skills. I am a regular reader of Dawn and I don’t have a problem while reading the news. I also write for Young World and enjoy reading it too. But maturer sections like Encounter and The Magazine really irritate me because at times I am not able to make sense of what’s written in these columns.
I feel I should be able to understand everything at this stage. How can I gain my confidence?

This isn’t a matter of language skills or confidence. It is a matter of comprehension skills. You feel that at this stage you should be able to understand everything. I think a person is always in the learning stage.
There is always something that we don’t know, and we live and learn. You should be able to tackle literature appropriate for your level.
Encounter and The Magazine are rather thick to wade through. They talk of politics, current affairs, and different world situations. Because of your limited foreknowledge of these subjects (due only to your young years) you might not be able to grasp the context. That’s perfectly okay. I’ll admit that they tax my brains as well. I’m glad, though, that you like to strive.
Dear Super Sis,
I am a 17-year-old boy and I have no self-confidence. I have no friends, I cannot talk to females, and I happen to do a number of stupid things due to my lack of confidence.

It’s quite all right if you’re not bold and brash or outspoken. Just imagine what a lot of din there would be if we all were like that. You don’t have to go out of your way to chat with girls. You can just speak to them normally in the course of the day, as you would with any other person. However, you can change your self-image. Your postscript shows that you are not too sure of yourself, and you seek constant assurance, guidance and correction. You should believe in yourself. Don’t hesitate or be in doubt too often. Just do what you think is right. Having good friends is also very important. It is a good social activity that boosts confidence and self-worth. Start being friendly with the students who sit next to you in class. A smile and a few simple questions are good starters. Helping out others also wins friends, praise and esteem. Think of yourself as a special person who has a lot to offer to the world, and you will be on the way to the top.
