Strike your matches on the amazing Matchbox Twenty, a band that only seems to get better and better. Definitely, with strong vocals, dominated by Rob Thomas, the super guitar solos and the background vocals to add to the rhythm, the band finally has proved that it can take the music world by storm. And indeed it has. Their third album, More Than You Think You Are, appearing in late 2002, is really innovative, as the band impresses fans with its pop rock genre of music. The critics had accused MB 20 of lacking diversity in their music. However, they’ve been proved wrong by the various instrumentation styles offered by Matchbox Twenty’s latest venture.
The album kicks off with the blaring thump of the duo Feel and Disease. Some great Spanish guitar work by Kyle Cook, altogether with the catchy chorus, supplies a perfect No. 2 for the album in this song. Besides this, Brights Lights has an appealing banjo start, followed by beautiful lyrics. Cold shows that Matchbox Twenty are really versatile, whereas All I Need shows that they’re not far behind in the lyrics department either. A lot of emotions have been put into Soul though at times not for the best as this song appears to be clearly over-sung. Matchbox Twenty’s Achilles Heel is that no matter how good the first half of the album may be, the other half is almost useless. Just 6 or 7 tracks in the album really make an impression. The Difference fails to make a difference, and concludes a good try, but at times not good enough.
More Than You Think You Are is their comeback album, and has provided a good platform for them to find their way to the top. It would be interesting to see the band progress in the days to come.
