OPINION CORNER: How I wish to use my summer vacations

A good citizen is one who together with his rights also thinks of his duties. He is always ready to sacrifice his own interests for the good of his country.

So being a good and responsible citizen, in my summer vacations I would do something to help my country and government, and for that I would keep my area and neighbourhood clean. I feel it’s not only the responsibility of our government to clean the mess created by us, but we ourselves must make an effort. We have a group of 30 boys and girls, between 9-12 years of age. Divided into different sub-groups, they are assigned houses and streets; their duty is to clean the mess by picking up wrappers etc, strewn in front of the houses, twice a day. They also have to force the people not to throw garbage on roads or outside their houses. They also encourage the people to use dustbins. Besides this, we have made colourful dustbins and placed them in front of every house. We have decided to have a competition between each group and then at the end of our vacations we all will see which group was the best and who has kept their streets most neat and clean.

I hope that God will help us in this good deed of helping our country.

SYED AWN MUHAMMAD JAFRI, Karachi

Summer vacations have started and it is the time for maximum enjoyment and relaxation.

I think real relaxation lies in doing a good deed by helping someone. I have been planning different things such as using my pocket money for orphans or to teach poor children. Since teaching is more difficult, I think I would opt for the first choice. I will collect my pocket money by saving some of it every week until it becomes a respectable amount.

I know of an orphanage. I will go and hand over the money to the in charge. The image of an orphanage is what I had read about in Oliver Twist. All the children would be living under difficult conditions with, perhaps, only one or may be two fans in this hot month. Perhaps they will have no uniforms and would be sitting on an old dirty carpet. After I give the money I will be happy because if it had remained with me it would be spent for my own personal need. I think I will keep on collecting my pocket money and continue to give it to the orphans. I will also suggest to my friends that they should also do the same.

HINA AHMED, Karachi

It gravely hurt me and my feelings when, stopping at a red light, I rolled down the window and a decrepit man standing beside the car hung his hand out for money. This compelled me to be helpful to the poor and needy. Therefore, in my summer vacations I would spend my time to alleviate some of the suffering of the poor.

Everyone knows about the soaring poverty and its reasons but, I came up with a solution. Though, I cannot address all but have picked some of the aggrieved families to begin with. During this summer vacation, I would give free coaching to their children to help them complete their education and stand on their feet and earn for their families. If I succeed in getting good results this summer then, in the coming years I will continue my work helping a few other families.

We should help poor families out of this predicament in whatever way possible, as it is our moral duty to do so.

One good deed or thing that I want or wish to do during my vacations is to teach poor children. Poor in the sense that they have difficulty paying their school fees and cannot afford tuition because it’s expensive. They are not even in the position to buy books. I want to help such children during these vacations. I’d teach them free of charge and buy them stationary that they can use. This is the best thing that I can do to help them. I’m sure this will make God happy and He will bless me. Inshahallah.

AMNA ABBAS, Lahore

During the summer vacations I wish to tech my maid’s daughter. She is a very poor girl and is incapable of joining school because the money which she earns doing housework is not enough to meet her educational expenses. I will try to teach her the basic things so that she will be able to join school. Being myself a student I cannot teach her regularly as I too have to study. When the holidays are over I will get her admitted to a government school and will also buy her uniforms, books, etc. from my pocket money. I also like to request others to do the same and this will also help increase the rate of literacy in Pakistan.
