Celebrating birthdays
IT IS a matter of concern for our society that nowadays people spend lavishly to celebrate birthdays. This celebration is un-Islamic. Most people think that it is just a gathering and a good time to meet others. But I think there are many other ways to have a good time, I wish that something could be done to cease this growing menace.

Poisonous media
NOWADAYS there are a lot of private channels. And owing to this media exposure we tend to pick up consciously or unconsciously whatever goes on in the world. The world is progressing day by day, however, that does not mean we forget our culture, our religion and our traditions. These days unfortunately a person who is religious is known as backward or a girl who is not wearing jeans and short shirts and wearing hijab and shalwar Kamiz with no boy-friend is known as backward and uncultured. This state of mind is the sole creation of the media. Even our local channels are telecasting stupid commercials, dramas and fashion shows. When young children watch these programmes, they adopt what’s being shown as their own style.

I want to say that if you cannot obey the orders of Islam don’t discourage others who do so.
MEHAK FATIMA, Lahore.

Speed-breakers
I’D like to draw the attention of the DHA authorities towards the need of speed-breakers on main Sea view road and the newly constructed roads in Defence Phase 6, 7 and 8. Due to the lack of speed-breakers, signals and roundabouts these roads are exposed to severe accidents day in and day out. Besides this, police check points should also be established to overcome the increasing dacoities in these areas. It’s due to the negligence of the authorities that no step is taken yet to prevent these problems.

Our lost glory
WE the Muslims were once a superior nation. Now we happen to be the most troubled nation and least glorified. The reason behind this downfall is that we have lost the right path and have started emulating the western culture. In our religion, to seek knowledge is obligatory to all. But unfortunately none of the Muslim country has a 100 per cent literacy rate. The top three of the most corrupt countries of the world are Muslim countries. Everywhere the Muslims are in trouble. There was also a time when Muslims were the conquerors of the world. But the situation is not the same yet. For the revival of the same glory, we must open our eyes and hearts to recite and understand the Holy Quran and hold on to its teachings dearly.
MUHAMMAD SHAHAB KHAN, Karachi

Cleanliness
God likes cleanliness. Hazrat Muhammad (Peace be upon him) said that cleanliness forms half of the faith. But in our country nobody pays heed towards it. We throw wrappers and containers all around the city. People are killed in broad daylight under the shadow of the so- called law enforcement agencies.

Municipal authorities should perform their duties daily keeping a watch if the sweepers are performing their duty as per routine or serving other people for pecuniary gains. According to Walter kaufmann what separates two people most profoundly is a different sense and degree of cleanliness.
ASIFA GHULAM RASOOL, Turbat.

Irregularities
A few days ago I had to go to Ratodero from Larkana, where I was shocked to see van drivers taking Rs20 instead of Rs15. I want to ask ‘why were they allowed to do so? Secondly the government has established an automobile stop at the city outskirts, but the vandrivers are in the habit of getting passengers from within the city. If we go to the automobile stop we don’t find any automobiles there.

I request the government to look into the matter and take appropriate action.
