Super Sis


Dear Super Sis,

I have a close relationship with one of my girl cousins who is two years older than I am. We are both very good friends, in fact, I even think of her as my elder sister but she’s almost reached the age of marriage and I’m afraid that I won’t be able to share my feelings with her as frequently as I do now when she gets married. To make matters worse I may even have to go abroad soon. I also don’t have many friends and I’m very much a loner, so this friendship means a lot to me. Please help me.

Dear Confused Capricorn,

I know it is difficult to lose a person with whom you are so close. But life does take such turns. When this cousin of yours gets married or you go abroad you can still be in touch with each other through e-mail and chat. Chatting has one benefit — you can talk to someone for a long time and yet it doesn’t cost a lot, and voice chat is like a long distance phone call. Though it would not the same as now, you would at least be in touch and be able to communicate with each other. Slowly and gradually as you would get busy in your life you would miss her less.

Also try to make new friends from amongst your cousins or school mates in whom you can confide and discuss your problems.

I am a 14-year-old Taurean. I am quite fat. I have three best friends who are slim, tall and smart. They never tease me for being fat but I feel embarrassed. Please suggest ways for losing enough weight and increasing my height, though I am not too short!

Dear Sad and Fat Taurean,

You have not mentioned your weight or height to give me an idea how fat and short you are. It is good that you realize that you are fat and wish to reduce. Being overweight, specially at your age, is not good.

Summer vacations are just beginning, you can use this time to concentrate on your health. Exercise regularly and the best exercises are skipping and jogging. Buy a skipping rope and start skipping, starting from ten move on slowly to hundred. Make sure you do this without breaks. Get up early in the morning and go for a jog. If you don’t have a playground in your locality where you can go you can jog in you compound or on the foot path.

Also watch what you eat. Don’t go on a diet as at your age your body needs proteins and minerals to grow. Just cut down on fatty food such as French fries, rice, potato, cheese, ice creams and chocolates, and, of course, soft drinks as they give you a lot of unnecessary calories. Junk food is a complete no no. You can also ask your friends how they maintain their weight. But whatever you do, please take a balanced diet.

As for height, you yourself have said that you are not too short. These exercises will improve you height as well. Moreover, you have 4-5 years more to grow. So don’t worry about that.
