Homework is something that you get almost everyday from your teachers. But the big question is... Do you like doing homework and do you manage to complete it on time? If your answer to this question is ‘No’ then here are some simple tips which may help make the task of doing homework easier for you.
Set a timetable
Many of you don’t have a fixed time to study. You do your homework whenever you feel like and sometimes you don’t feel like doing your homework at all. It is therefore necessary to make a timetable and follow it strictly. Once you start doing your homework according to a timetable, you will get into the habit of doing it regularly.
Some of you may prefer to study right after coming home from school. Well, there is no harm in doing so, but you must eat something before you sit down to study. At this time, the things that you learn at school are fresh in your mind and you can recall them easily. If you don’t want to study immediately after returning from school, it’s alright. You may take a rest for an hour or two and then sit down to study. But sooner you complete your homework, the better. Don’t wait to do your homework late in the evening. Your brain will be tired by then and you will feel sleepy. The next day you might even end up giving an explanation to your teacher for not doing the homework.
Sometimes you don’t get homework. This does not mean that you should not study. Homework or no homework, You should revise everything that you studied in your class on a daily basis. This will save you from panic during exams. When you make a timetable, work out how much time you need to do the homework given by your teachers and how much time do you need to study and revise all the subjects yourself. Don’t spend too much time on one subject, otherwise you might find that the day is over and other subjects still remain untouched. One more thing! Write down your timetable neatly and put it up at a place where you can see and follow it regularly.
Find a quiet corner
Concentration while doing homework is necessary. It helps you to understand what you are studying without wasting much time.
You can work with concentration if you find a quiet place for yourself to study and avoid all kinds of distractions. Don’t sit in a room where the TV is on or where people are talking. Tell your brothers and sisters not to disturb you while you are studying. Avoid talking on the phone and don’t get up to eat something after every few minutes. Keep all your books, papers, pens and pencils within easy reach. File your important papers . Also, clearly label all your books and copies so that you don’t waste time searching for them. Avoid sitting in bed while doing homework because this will make you sleepy and you will lose concentration. Your study area should have a chair to sit and a desk or a table to keep all your books and stationery without creating a mess. There should be plenty of light and ventilation in your study area.
Make your homework interesting
Instead of getting bored of your homework, try and make it interesting. For example, if you are doing geometry, think how it can help you if you become an architect or how you can make use of geometry in making an abstract painting. If you are doing history or geography, try and gather extra information on the topics you are covering and make a small quiz with the help of that information. Later you can solve this quiz as a game with your brother, sister or friend.
A positive attitude
You must have the enthusiasm and determination to achieve good results in your studies. Therefore, don’t grumble if you get too much homework. In case the homework is too much with some small and some major assignments, do the small ones first and then tackle the major ones. This way you will be able to finish your work quickly. But if there is not much homework to do, then tackle the most difficult assignment first with a fresh mind.
Always set goals for yourself. Your most important goal should be getting straight A’s in your report card. Keep this goal in mind while you study. You may also give yourself a reward on completing your homework. For example, you may watch your favourite TV programme or you may have your favourite snack once you complete your homework.
Don’t learn in haste
If you have something to learn for a test or an exam, try not to learn it in a haste. Always read carefully whatever you have to learn and then try to understand it. Write it down on paper. In other words make notes. The matter which you write down in the form of notes is remembered more easily. Learning without understanding is a bad habit. Those who have this habit face difficulties when they step into practical life.
Ask for help
Never hesitate to ask for help if you have difficulty understanding anything. You may ask your parents, elder brother or sister and even friends to help you out. Most importantly, never feel shy to ask your teacher to explain to you what you did not understand. Give more time and attention to the subject in which you are weak, but at the same time don’t neglect the other subjects.
Finally, always keep a record of your achievements and progress.
