Promoting young talent

There is a lot of hidden young talent in our country. The fact came to light at a recent competition, called ISEO (International Schools Educational Olympiad), held recently in Karachi, which exhibited many young students who proved their talent in fields such as dramatics, vocals, photography, filmmaking, modelling, quiz and arts.

This Olympiad which was organized by Karachi High School and sponsored by Intel, British Council and Indus Entertainment also invited some international teams, but they were unable to come due to security reasons. However, the competition brought together students from as many as 107 schools of Karachi, Lahore, Islamabad and Quetta.

Dramatics was one area, which drew most of the schools’ participation. The theme for this year was And My Clone Lives On... which was based on the issue of human cloning. The first prize went to Salamat ICAS. In their play they portrayed humans as clones of the devil. They stood apart mainly due to their novel idea, quality script and brilliant performance. This school also clinched the Best Actor Trophy. Foundation Public School added a little humour to the theme as they interpreted it in a comical way. They narrated a new version of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, where the clone of the murdered king reappears.

Besides this, the participants were allowed to highlight any issue of their choice through photography. The award for this segment went to the Lyceum School, whereas DHA Degree College won the second prize.

There was a quiz competition as well, which was a perfect combination of both fun and knowledge. Anchored by Barry O’Brien, who was invited from India, the show held on to the interest of the audience right until the very end. Aureole High School, Atchison College Lahore, and Salamat ICAS won the 1st, 2nd and 3rd prize respectively.

The highlight of the programme were performances by children in the closing ceremony. Some Indian delegates were specially invited for this Olympiad, including a 17-year-old student Shouvik Banerjee from Kolkata and Barry O’ Brien.

Other than participating and competing with each other ISEO 2003 also gave the students a chance to interact with students from the different schools of Karachi and elsewhere. The organizers promised to make sure that participants from other countries do turn up next year. This would make this competition even more exciting.
