Man has tarnished nature with indelible marks of pollution. Natural resources have been depleted and have deprived nature of its splendour. Keeping this in mind, River Oaks Academy initiated a major event in relation to the ‘Earth Day’. The aim was to create awareness among the masses to highlight different means of purging Mother Nature and its man-marred beauty. A Mega Art Exhibition was organized on April 22 in relation to Earth Day, the theme being Heal The World. Fifteen schools from Karachi participated in this event; in all around 500 entries from various schools were received. There were four different categories each distinguished by different age groups — 3-5 years, 6-8 years, 9-12 years and 13-16 years.
The following were the winners:
Minhal Soorti (River Oaks Academy) first; Amina Adil (Beacon House School) 2nd; and Wasey Tabani (River Oaks Academy) 3rd in Category A (3-5 years)
Aroosha Ghafoor (Beacon House School) first; Alveena Fatima (Al-Murtaza School) 2nd; and Abeeha Aimum (Dawood Public School) 3rd in Category B (6-8 years)
Sobia Mohammed (Karachi Cambridge School) first; Shahzeb Shaikh (Karachi Grammar School) 2nd; and Saar Qaiser (Karachi Cambridge School) in Category C (9-12 years)
Anushka Rustumji (Karachi Grammar School) first; Faiza Ashraf (Karachi Cambridge School) 2nd; and Areeba Masood (Karachi Cambridge School) 3rd in Category D (13-16).
Environmental campaign
An environmental campaign named Faryad was recently launched by KFC Lahore, to create awareness about the environmental hazards among children. This programme was held at AlHamra Hall, in which about 35 schools participated.
Two months ahead of the final programme students were provided with seeds in pots to grow and colouring books on environment.
Later they came up with admirable performances and projects. They staged stunning skits,and tableaus on serious issues such as pollution and deforestation. The skit “Stop the destruction of our Mother Earth ” received colossal appreciation. At the end of the programme prizes were distributed for best Faryad students, best artwork displayed and best stage presentation by renowned personalities — Mr Amjad Islam Amjad, Mr Javed Iqbal (cartoonist), Mrs Sajida Vandal (NCA Principal), Mrs Gazala Rehman (SOS director) and Miss Samreen (Environmental Professor at Kinaird College). The Highlight of this programme was the performance of the children who were dressed in colourful outfits, which was highly praised by the audience.

Art exhibition 2003
An exclusive Art exhibition to promote the exceptional talent of Students of Leading Art Schools was recently organized at the Park Towers. Pakistan’s living legend Guljee inaugurated the Art Festival. The inauguration ceremony witnessed some other well-known personalities along with press people to grace the occasion.
The objective of this three-day exhibition was to encourage budding artists and provide them with an opportunity to exhibit their work in a public place where it can be appreciated by all. The exclusive artwork from the students of Karachi School of Art, Indus Valley, CIAC (Arts Council), Institute of Art Heritage and Sadequain were exhibited.
The atrium looked like art gallery where sculptures dominated the overall display. The sculpture of a tree made of recycled material caught the attention of the visitors as soon as they entered the mall. The statue of a sitting man was the main attraction at this event. Paintings placed on the black and white boards were appreciated by all. Visitors took great interest in fabric painting displayed on Level II. Some of the sculptures and paintings were sold instantly.
Children’s festival
A two-day colourful children’s festival was held at the Maritime Museum, Karachi last week. The festival was organized by the Pakistan Crescent Youth Organization, National Forum for Environment and Health (NFEH) and the Publicity Channel.
There were a number of fun activities that were enjoyed by both the children and their parents. Various sports activities, tableaus, folk dance, fashion shows, painting competitions, music fairs and mehndi art competitions were the highlight of the event. A large number of food stalls presented a huge variety of cuisine.
Prizes and gifts were also distributed among the winners of various competitions.
