One of the films that always topped my favourite movie list as a kid was Mary Poppins, starring Julie Andrews, who played the stern but the fantastic nanny to perfection.
In the book Mary Poppins Opens the Door by P.L. Travers, Mary makes an unexpected reentry into the lives of Jane and Michael Banks. One Guy Fawkes Night when they’re letting off fireworks and watching them leave golden streaks in the sky, one firework refuses to burst into sparks and instead very mysteriously returns to the ground in the form of a very prim and smartly dressed lady holding a parrot headed umbrella. The Banks children squeal with joy as they recognize their extraordinary nanny!
Jane and Michael, suffer in silence under Mary’s stern gaze and belittling comments as she disciplines them in a no-nonsense fashion but they also can’t help loving her as her bedtime stories unfold and become real enough for them to step into and become a part of. As a reader, one feels no different with the book weaving a spell of magical but convincing fantasy, making one wish also to step inside the tale.
