I couldn’t believe it... I would live in eternal embarrassment... why, why? Why did it have to happen to me? So, I wearily walked up the school steps, wondering if I should go back home. Of all the days, yesterday was career day. With much planning, Sarah and I had tried to sneak out of it. We had so many plans, but none of them worked... you see, my dad was a doctor, and her’s was an architect... they were both coming to speak.
The first person on the speakers’ panel was a consultant. How boring! We felt like dormant mice, and we would have fallen asleep if one of the teachers hadn’t shaken us awake.
Next, came Sarah’s father. His presentation was quite interesting, but Sarah didn’t think so. He kept calling her name, and soon everyone was trying to divert his attention to the other side of the room. After another talk, we went for lunch. The lunch was just as bad as our day. Everyone wondered what we would have to endure for the next three sessions.
The teachers were thrilled to see that we had actually behaved ourselves, and to add to our troubles they expected us to keep this code of conduct for the rest of the day. My thoughts were interrupted as we were told to quickly devour our food, as it was time to go back to the career speech session ...
The next speaker was a lady, who was a lawyer. She looked exquisite, and an aura of exaltation prevailed around her. Soon the boys started misbehaving, and with much exasperation one of the teachers had to drag them all out of the room. “Pretty cool, huh!” I thought. We were endowed with much wisdom during this presentation, and I’m sure all the girls present thought of becoming lawyers someday...
Our second last speaker was an enigmatic psychologist who was a psycho himself. He let off an air of exempt wherever he went, and this drove all of us crazy... he wouldn’t stop talking! We discovered that he was deaf as we had to scream questions at him... that he wouldn’t even turn to. With much exertion, he told us how great his job was, and in turn, we told him to get a life, and get out.
The last speaker was none other than my dad... He tried to act exuberant, and everyone loved him... everyone but me. He kept mentioning my name, and everything! So, before he was even halfway through, I burst out of the door, and wondered where to go. I just wanted to get away from everyone... but then I needed to think first. So, I just sat down on the curb, and awaited my destiny...
