Young World

March 29, 2003

Hi kids!

The whole week has passed by with the atmosphere echoing with sounds of gunfire, bombing and cries of war. The war is being fought on the streets of Iraq, but it seems as though the whole world is involved in it. In every home the TV is tuned to news channels telecasting war updates. Wherever two people are sitting they are found talking of war — either justifying or condemning it.

But how can one justify war?

War means bloodshed, death, injury, destruction and suffering. Modern war is very unlike ancient wars which were only fought on battlefields and only soldiers were killed or wounded. In the present day, wars are fought with tanks, bombs and missiles. These weapons do not have the capability to judge soldier from civilian and kill indiscriminately. Water and electric supplies are affected, hospitals and schools are grounded, thus resulting in the collapse of the entire infrastructure. The sick and injured cannot be provided medical care, causing more loss of life and suffering.

It is heartening to know that people world wide are protesting against and condemning war — even in the invading countries. War is not a solution to problems. There are always peaceful ways to solve problems. Let’s make a pledge to propagate peace and condemn war and armed conflicts everywhere in the world — be it Iraq, Kashmir, Palestine, or anywhere. Promise to always work for peace and do whatever you can, in your little way, to promote peace. Learn to live in peace and respect others’ rights. Our motto should be ‘Live and let live’.

See you next week!

Bye!

Ed
