Let’s talk about misunderstandings today. Misunderstandings can lead to all kinds of silly repercussions. Here is an example:
The person on the phone cheerfully informed me that her husband had become ‘Commodore’. Now was it my fault to have heard ‘murdered’ instead of the real word? Anyway, I tried being sympathetic and everything. Meanwhile, I was also trying to figure out why on earth she was so chirpy. As it is, this lady talks in a very strange and peculiar way. She said, “I am so happy, dear. My husband has finally reached the right place. He got that star. He is going up and up now.”
What I thought was that she was actually happy to see him go up in the sky and become one of the stars, as some very imaginative people believe dead people to have become. Then she added, “I want you to come to my place for some khana.” And I started thinking that she was actually going to celebrate his passing away.
Of course, everything was cleared up later, I felt really silly and everything. But see how one single mistake in hearing got my imagination rolling. That’s how it is with misunderstandings. One wrong thought may trigger a chain of negative thoughts and before you know it, something really big has been made out of nothing at all. It wasn’t my fault to have heard wrong. That can happen to anyone. My fault was to imagine the rest of the story about her being happy to be rid of the man.
So friends, don’t just assume anything. Be very sure about things before reaching any conclusions.
