BOOK: journey to the centre of the earth

By Moizza Binat Sarwar

Journey to the Centre of the Earth is Jules Verne’s magnum opus of the traveling brand.

Despite its publication in 1864 it still has to come to that stage where it is pushed into oblivion by modern science. Axel is one of those (un)fortunate few who are possessed of an eccentric uncle who goes by the name of Otto Lidenbrock. After a lengthy toil over an Icelandic script the two decode a message revealing the way to the core of the Earth. With no preamble the professor orders the boy to pack his box. After of course he has dispensed with stuffing the professors. The tow set off for Iceland where the real journey begins. The center of the Earth appears to be not a component of the Earth as they know it with flora and fauna and geographical features whose beauty and diversity are staggering to say the least. Bewildering finds of other breeds in conjunction with these are brought to the best kind of climax that does not detract from the fluency of the narrative in any sense.
