STORY TIME: A lonely tree

By Farah Salahuddin

Once there was a tree who was very unhappy because he had been alone for years. He missed his other companion trees which had once gathered around him. Back then they talked and laughed for hours and hours. But all were cut down one after the other.

Standing all alone, one day, he looked at himself and said, “Alas, how unlucky I am. There is no one to take care of me. No one even waters me.” Tears flowed out of his eyes and fell on dry grass.

The aggrieved grass heard what the tree had to say and said, “You are still better off than me. Look at me! I have gone all dry. Still people come and sit on me. You are weak too and yet you bear fruits and shelter for the people. We are both kind and helpful. I think the best thing to do would be to spend whatever life we have left praising our Lord.”

The tree appreciated her advice and was very grateful for her help. Thereafter, the tree kept itself busy in prayer.

One day, a wealthy man along with his servant happened to pass through the tree.

“Sir, I think this place would be perfect for living.” Said the servant.

“Hmmm...” The wealthy man thought while looking around. “You may be right. But this place seems very quiet. It would make me feel lonely. Anyway, I’ll ask my mother to tell me what she thinks.” Said the wealthy man.

The next time he came, he was accompanied by his mother. Seeing what a nice and open place this was, his mother liked it very much. She wanted to live here too and planned to grow a garden in it.

After that, the tree wasn’t alone any more because the old woman planted many tree saplings around it. The grass grew greener too. The place was soon turned into a magnificent garden. The old woman was very loving and kind. She would water all the plants everyday. Both the tree and the grass had their prayers answered.
