BOOK: From Sir with love

By Omair Alavi

Every cricket lover knows, recognizes and remembers Viv Richards as probably the best batsman of all times. What they don’t know are the secrets of the ‘Master Blaster’, which he only kept to himself during his sporting days. Now, after 10 years of retirement, Richards has unveiled his secrets in his maiden autobiography ‘Sir Vivian — The definitive autobiography’.

And definitive it surely is. At least for Sir Isaac Vivian Alexander Richards, who was recently declared the best one-day batsman ever for accumulating 6,721 runs in 167 one-day innings and who used to thrash bowlers of his generation to all parts of the ground at will. In this book, he discloses his past and present while talking at length about his 17 years as a cricketer for the West Indies. Bob Harris has co-authored and helped Richards in his first attempt to come up with a book that has been divided in 15 chapters. Not only does it feature everything from Richards’ first memories of himself to the Viv Richards of the 21st century; it also presents a detailed statistical view of Richards’ record as a Test and One-day International player.

Richards writes at length about various problems faced by cricket teams today. His stand on sledging and match-fixing in this book is highly recommended while his opinion on the current West Indian cricket team, its future prospects and his fellow cricketers surely counts. He also points out those talented cricketers whom he found out to be the best in his time.

And above all, about 20 pictures of historic importance add colour to this already colourful book. So if you are looking for a book that would keep you glued for sometime and improve your knowledge about cricket’s greatest batsman, then this book is ideal for you. It is available at all good bookshops so buy it before the stock ends!
