The book Count of Monte Cristo is set in the time when Napoleon had been exiled and people were trying to restore his throne. Keeping this main idea in mind the author, Alexander Dumas, revolves the story around it so that the climax is based on it. While reading the book, I felt that at places the story seems to be that of some movie, maybe the scriptwriters have been inspired by Dumas!
The story starts with Edmond Dantes, a sailor and the main character of the book, coming back home. He has been named Captain of the ship, which aroused jealousy in Danglars, one of the crew members. Danglars knows that Edmond had secretively given a letter to a person who was helping Napoleon in getting his throne back. He uses this information to get Dantes into trouble with the police, for that made him a traitor.
Well, the story goes on and suddenly, we find ourselves in a maze from which we have to find out who is Edmond and who the other people are.
Many subplots branch out from the main plot. The good thing about the book is that it has drama and suspense added to spice it up. In the latter part, there is a murderer on the loose and characters meet their old friends and enemies.
Had it not been for the suspense and some other things, I would never
have finished this book, because it goes at an unbearably slow pace. But this is a book I am sure classic lovers would want to read.
