STORY TIME: Ali’s fate

By Behjat Sahar

Ali was the youngest child of the family. His mother and father were very busy people. Both ran their own businesses. All his older brothers and sisters were many years older than him. They too would be very busy with their own lives and studies. No one seemed to have any spare time to spend with Ali.

Ali was both mentally and physically a weak child by birth. He was often ill falling prey to all kinds to infections. He needed a lot of care and attention, but was unable to get it as everyone in his house was very busy. His parents had put him in the care of servants but they too were unable to provide him with the attention and care he needed. That is how Ali became a very neglected child. Whenever Ali, who was now very miserable and frustrated, threw a tantrum for something, his parents scolded and beat him a lot.

Time passed like this and Ali grew up into a teenager. He still remained very ill and weak and was neither attractive nor handsome. And now he had also started detesting his family. No one cared for him, no one fulfilled his requests and no one appreciated, encouraged or even helped him in any way. Ali’s grades had also started falling but he felt that there was no one there to guide him.

Ali found solace in the company of wrong people, who pretended to be his friends. They introduced him to drugs. Ali would hide in his room to smoke and take drugs. His family soon came to know of this and instead of guiding him, became very angry at him. Not only did they scold and punish him, he was also prohibited to go anywhere except to college.

This curfew gave Ali to be more cause to be angry with his family. By each passing day he would hate them more and more. Then one day his bad friends told him to run away from home and come and live with them. Ali accepted their offer, and one day packed up all his things and ran away from home.

Ali started living with his bad friends in their dirty flat. He did not like the place but still he liked the company. Soon his so-called friends encouraged him to indulge in more bad things such as robbery. Once he was even caught and put in jail but with the help of his friends he managed to escape from there as well.

Meanwhile Ali’s worried family searched for him day and night without any success. Then one day Ali was caught stealing. There were people chasing him on the road. Trying to escape, he was running on the road when he was hit by a car. He died on the spot.

When Ali’s parents came to know of this they just could not be comforted. They also found out about his other wrong doings. Stealing, drug use and the bad company he kept was like a slap to his parents’ pride. They realized their mistake, but nothing could be done now. Their sweet boy was dead and nothing could bring him back.
