A dying sport
I want to draw the attention of the Government of Pakistan and other large institutions towards the fall in importance and glory of hockey. Our national team, which could have benefited through the organizing of regular training camps is being neglected due to our enthusiasm for promoting cricket. But hockey is important as well. In fact, it is our national game.

Once upon a time we used to be world champions in the sport but now our past reputation is fading. At school level also, only a few schools show any interest in the game. I appeal to big schools and institutions throughout the country that if the government cannot do anything then at least you all should come forward to save your national game.

Encouragement
There are various students in our schools who unfortunately are not encouraged by their teachers. The teachers are giving attention only to position holders. Meanwhile the ones who are lagging behind in their studies are allowed to go from bad to worse. They are in grave danger of gradually lose heart. I earnestly request all school teachers to give equal attention to all their students.

Incorrect info
This is in response to Zarina Patel’s article, ‘Installation of peripheral devices’. I would like to ask her to please name things properly. She writes, “A monitor is directly connected with a monitor port of the processor by means of a cable”. A ‘monitor port’ is actually the VGA port of the computer and to correct many people here, the processor is actually a unit fitted into the motherboard. Ms Patel should have used the term CPU instead of processor here.

In another article, she writes that the processor is the most important part of the motherboard. This is wrong. The processor is not a part of the motherboard. It’s fitted into it!

A scanner is not connected to a ‘scanner-port’; it is connected to a LPT1 port. In figure 2, she has shown many things wrong. The audio connector is very small, not as big as she shows it, the IDE port is bigger than shown, about the size of the given audio connector. And the power cable is not oval or round, it is flat like the audio connector, but a little bigger.

She has also wrongly stated that software installation has nothing to do with hardware. Well sometimes, like when installing a printer, scanner or using Philip’s Light frame technology, both software and hardware are required for proper function.

Don’t cross the limit
If you have not read him then you must have at least heard Baba Bulleh Shah’s name. He was a great Sufi poet who is buried in Kasur, a city close to Lahore. Recently I was watching a comedy programme on TV where they performed a parody of a famous Bulleh Shah kalam. In place of Bulleh Shah’s name, they used the word, ‘Tullehya’. I was very sad and hurt to see them making a mockery of such a noble person.

Creating parodies is not a bad thing. It can be very funny if done well. But while doing something like this one should take care not to hurt the sentiments of others. We must not cross certain limits while merrymaking.

Books
One can judge the significance of books from the saying, ‘a room without books is like a body without a soul’. Books, in fact, are our real and best friends, which lead us toward a prosperous future. Referring to books helps us gain more knowledge about the world because books are after all a mirror to the world. But these days instead of reading books, students seem to be more interested in watching TV and playing games. It would be much wiser and beneficial to read books because books help make our future bright.
