MISCELLANEA

Let’s be friends
Existing tensions between Pakistan and India pose a serious threat to the future of children on either side. The minds of the young should be devoid of things such as hate, enemies and war. Since wars begin in the mind of men, we need to build defences of peace in the minds of children if Pakistan and India are ever to learn to coexist in peace.

Recently two schools, one each from Pakistan and India, decided to start a children’s Indo-Pak penfriends’ club under a peace project called Aao dosti karein. The schools, Habib Public School of Karachi, Pakistan and the City Montessori School of Lucknow, India, decided to exchange letters between the students of their schools.

Care was taken for these letters, written first by Indian students, to be given to students of an equivalent class or level in Pakistan. All the recipients were encouraged, but not forced, to reply. Later their replies were mailed back to India in a single package to be distributed among the participating children for whom the response was meant.

The minds behind this great idea of spreading friendship and peace hope to foster personal friendship between thousands of Indo-Pak children, thereby sowing the seeds of peace for a brighter future for the coming generations.

Carnival
The first Green Globe Carnival organized by the Defence Authority O and A Levels School was held last month at the school’s premises. Many schools of Karachi participated in this day long event.

The reason behind holding such a get-to-gether was to raise awarness about maintaining a clean environment. Pollution is a raging issue of the modern world and ways of controlling this hazardous situation were discussed at length.

About 5000 stalls were put up all over the school’s extensive grounds. These included food stalls, game stalls, clothes and books and what not? Early Learning School had put up a nice little CD and books stall. L’ecole had put up another fine stall where teachers too sold paintings, flowers and beautiful bangles. Many children, representing their schools, had put up their own individual stalls where they sold handmade creations such as bags and miniature models.

There was a merry-go-round and jumping castle too to keep the fun and learning together as well as entertain the busy bodies. A fancy dress show provided the kids a chance to dress up as their favourite characters. Entertainment was also provided by music bands and a children’s choir. A magic and puppet show was also arranged. Delicious snacks were available throughout the day. A lucky draw at the end of the day added to the ongoing excitement.

The Chief Guest on the occasion was Mrs Asif Ghazali. Celebrities like Fatima Surraiya Bajiya, Bushra Ansari, Shakeel, Jamshed Ansari added colour to the carnival.
