MUSIC: spins

By Mahjabeen Sultan

All Savage Garden fans must have heard about the split up of the group and Darren Hayes going off solo. Well, people really believed that Darren would be able to produce something mind blowing, as he used to do all the song writing as well as singing for the band. But ‘Spin’, his latest album, is extremely disappointing. Apart from two or three nice beats, the rest are all average songs.

The title song, Spin, is different from other songs but it fails to have that special something present in title songs. Insatiable has Hayes rasping throughout.

A lot of emphasis is placed on sensual lyrics. You eventually get tired of listening to the same ‘sick’ romantic lines unless you really have a knack for this stuff. Dirty starts with the now-familiar ‘Ooh-Aah’ and ‘Yea-Yea-Yea’. Darren sounds daring, his voice oozing with lust. Strange relationship has good lyrics but it can’t be rated a block-buster.

There are a few mellow tracks in this album as well. I miss you, Can never get enough of you and Like it or not are all dulcet tunes and touching lyrics, containing a hint of the same romantic aura. Crush is one song that actually interested me with its bouncy beats and lively lyrics.

If you are a die-hard Savage Garden fan then you are probably in love with this album already. Still I’d say that you check out a few songs first so as to get an idea of what this album is all about and only then go for it.
